In Memoriam

Dr. Frank Beier (1965-2025)
The Canadian Connective Tissue Society reflects on the life and legacy of Dr. Frank Beier, who passed away peacefully with his family by his side on July 18, 2025, at the age of 59. Joining Western University in 2001, Frank established a world-renowned research program in cartilage development and osteoarthritis. He leaves behind a lasting legacy through his internationally recognized contributions to cartilage biology and functional genomics. His greatest source of professional pride was his trainees. During his 24 years at Western University, Frank trained over 120 students in his lab and mentored many more. In 2025, he was awarded the Canadian Connective Tissue Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award, reflecting his outstanding career and profound impact on trainees and colleagues. Frank was a dedicated member of our community and he was deeply honored to receive this recognition. In honour of Frank’s memory, the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at Western University is establishing an award in his name to support the recruitment of students from equity-deserving groups into basic research within his home department.
